The key to usable design is that the user shouldn’t have to stop and think about how to use it. But to create a product that feels friendly and straightforward, without sacrificing functionality, I don’t start with lines of code or screens. I begin with a deep understanding of the users. In this case, both beginner and experienced golfers.
From that insight, I built a coherent system based on reusable modular elements: color palettes, typography, and visual components. Documenting everything in a centralized library allows me to iterate quickly and ensure consistency and scalability, from the home screen to the most complex modules.
This project is a reflection of effort, creativity, and collaboration with a great client.
I’m very proud of the results we achieved.
The ideation stage went far beyond designing screens, it required full immersion in the world of golf. To create an experience that felt authentic, engaging, and functional, I had to learn the game, in theory and practice. I studied the rules, the game modes (like Stroke Play and Match Play), the various formats (Stableford, Scramble, Four-ball, among others), and even played full matches to truly understand the sport firsthand.
One of the main challenges was understanding how the handicap system works and how it directly impacts scoring and rules in each match. Through interviews and user insights, we realized that simplifying score management and match creation would be essential to deliver an accessible experience without sacrificing depth.
We also considered real-world usage scenarios: for instance, users engage with the app outdoors, primarily during the day and under direct sunlight. This led us to design screens with high contrast, light color palettes, and clear visual hierarchies to ensure readability in real conditions.
The design challenge was to transform a traditionally sober sport into a vibrant, accessible, and lively visual experience. From the start, I knew BeatGolf had to stand out not just through functionality, but through its tone. After all, this is an app about playing, and that playful spirit needed to be reflected in every detail.
Drawing from the user insights and my aesthetic criteria, I used MidJourney to explore visual worlds with a cartoon-like style: friendly, expressive, and joyful characters designed to create emotional connection and lighten the user experience. These characters appear throughout the app, acting as visual guides and forming a key part of the product’s identity.
The entire design process was carried out in Figma and delivered in modular phases, closely aligned with a development roadmap. This approach allowed us to build a solid MVP with a clear release plan for future updates. Each delivery included high-fidelity prototypes that were presented to the client for validation before moving forward
BeatGolf was born from a clear premise: to make golf a more inclusive, entertaining, and social experience. The app aims to translate the sport’s technical complexity into an intuitive, gamified, and emotionally engaging interface.
Rather than replicating existing solutions, we proposed a new visual and functional narrative for an increasingly diverse audience, from amateur golfers to experienced players looking for a more flexible, connected, and motivating tool.
